Influencer Culture: Hot Girls Don’t Gatekeep

I don’t like using the term “influencer” because it makes me sound like a pretentious d*ck – but let’s be real, an influencer is exactly what I am (but if anyone asks, I’m a content creator, okay?)

Here is my favourite definition of an influencer:

Felt that. Thanks, Urban Dictionary!

Influencing now branches out into a variety of different sectors; food, fashion, travel, lifestyle, décor, and even pet care! However, this means that influencers are facing more “competition” than ever. I use quotations because I have never seen other creators in that way, in fact, I have made a lot of good friends through influencing, and to view any of them as people I have to compete against is just… ridiculous.

That being said, with so many people striving to become influencers, it would be utterly absurd to assume that there won’t be similarities between online creators. This is especially true in the fashion department.

I’ve sadly come across creators who have thrown around accusations that other creators are “copying” their style. It’s interesting (and a little comical) that somebody who’s job it is to encourage consumers to purchase the products they promote would then accuse said people of being copycats. It’s like a chef sharing their favourite recipe and then being made that aspiring cooks would dare try it for themselves.

We’re not here to gatekeep fashion, we’re here to express ourselves and inspire others. Don’t they say imitation is the biggest form of flattery?

Here’s why I think we shouldn’t be gatekeeping fashion, especially as influencers:

  • Fashion is a form of self-expression! It’s a way for people to express themselves, their personality, and their individuality. By gatekeeping fashion, you limit others’ ability to explore their style in the way they want to.
  • Fashion is entirely subjective! What one person considers fashionable may not be the same as another person’s opinion. Fashion is a matter of personal taste and everyone is entitled to like what they like (or don’t like!)
  • Fashion should be inclusive! It’s for everyone, regardless of their background, status, OR identity. If you gatekeep a certain style, you’re excluding others who may not fit into the mold of what is considered fashionable!
  • Fashion changes! It’s not static, but rather constantly evolving. Gatekeeping it limits the potential for creativity and innovation, and hinder the progress and growth of the fashion industry. Don’t be the reason fashion becomes stagnate!

So yes, fashion should be a space for individuality, creativity, and inclusivity. Be flattered if people take inspiration from you, it means they love what you’re doing!
